I recently saw this tweet from ‘Weird History.’
During Japan’s 200 years of isolation (1639-1853), Dutch were the only foreigners allowed to trade. When the Japanese broke isolation and sent the first ambassadors abroad, the only European language they knew was Dutch—which they discovered to their surprise wasn’t that useful. pic.twitter.com/uBL9kdLOFs

They only knew Dutch language which they discovered was useless.
Can you imagine what that would have been like?
You’ve been isolated from the real world for so long you don’t even know the language the rest of world uses (English had become the language of international commerce). Talk about being ill equipped to make things happen.
Same thing happens in relationships. We lose track of our partner’s love language. Which results in failure to meet their needs.
It happens because of isolation. Not the same kind of isolation Japan experienced. They were literally cut off from the world.
Marriage isolation is different. It happens when we stop engaging with our spouse on an intimate level. We talk but don’t connect. There is a difference.
We will talk about those differences below. For now, I want to drive home the point that communication and connection must be seen as synonymous. Or at least very closely connected.
