For years my wife always made Valentines Day a special day for her girls.

Dinner. Dress up. Movie. Games.

She literally turned her kitchen and den into a Disneyland-type experience.

To this day the girls talk about how special Valentines Day was for them. It’s still one of our favorite holidays.

It’s romantic. Charming. And fun.

Whether you are having a party with friends, a family night with the kids, or you and your spouse are looking for a fun night, here’s 20 games you can play on this special day.

The games in four categories:

  • Group Valentine Games
  • Family Valentine Games
  • Couples Valentine Games
  • Sexy Games

Of course, you can mix it up. Group games can be family games and vise-versa.

Full disclosure: I haven’t played it yet. But it is on my list.

Our friends and family have played and keep telling us how much fun it is. My daughter says it’s there ‘go to game’ with friends.

Why Men Pull Away

How To Play

Here’s a couple of quick videos explaining how to play. It’s actually pretty simple and the instructs are clear.

What I Like

See my disclosure above.

I like the fact that this is a board game and can be played with friends and family – no one getting embarrassed by the questions.

Some games get to ‘mature’ for younger players; this one is appropriate for ages 12-seniors.

What I Don’t Like

One compliant I kept seeing was there are several versions of the game. Most people indicated the older version was better.

#2: Escape From the Iron Gate

If you like escape room adventures, this game will help you bring it right to your own home.

How to Play

The objective of the game is:

“Your objective is to escape Iron Gate Prison by moving through each of the four areas on the board – from the Cellblock to The Yard, The Cafeteria, The Warden’s Office, then finally to freedom! In order to progress to the next area, you’ll need to turn in the items on your Gate Card to the Commissary. Items are collected by completing puzzles, drawing, acting, and trading. The player that passes through the Final Gate first wins.”

Here’s a video on how to play the game.

What I Liked About It

It’s easy to learn and can be played over and over because each game presents new scenarios. So it’s not like other escape games that once you play, you know all the secrets.

The rules are pretty clear. Some people find other escape-type games difficult because of the complex rules. Not so here.

It’s a strategy game. So if forces you to build alliances, and sometimes you team up to work against others.

What I Didn’t Like

Only takes about an hour to play. Of course this is based on the number of players. This can be a plus if you are pressed for time, but I prefer game nights to last a little longer.

Made for a minimum of three players and no more than eight. This forces you to keep your group small.

If you are a fan of The Office, and like Michael Scotts sexual inuendo’s ‘That what she said’ this game is for you. It’s not as crass as Cards Against Humanity (I’ve never played it), but has enough edge to push the envelope a little.

How To Play

Each player is given 5 white ‘phrase cards.’ Someone is selected to the be judge of that round.

The Judge starts by selecting a red setup card and reading it out loud. Everyone but the Judge respond to the setup with their funniest phrase card by placing it face-down on the table.

The Judge shuffles the cards before sharing each answer with the group.

The judge picks the funniest card played, and whoever submitted it wins the round!

You can download instruction for the game here.

What I Like

As I mentioned, it is not racy like Cards Against Humanity. Yet it can get edgy.

As one person said, ‘This is not your game if you are super religious!’

All in all, this is a fun game.

Obviously these girls thought it was funny:

What I Didn’t Like

You really need to buy the extra cards so you have enough. You can go through cards quickly if you are playing with several couples.

Conversation Chemistry

How To Play

One player draws card and has to do what is on the card.

The cards fall into different categories, ie., spice things up, etc.

It’s pretty straight forward.

What I Like

It’s fun and involves action at times. Not just a sit around and talk game.

The questions go beyond the average ‘Where were you born?’ type of stuff that you should already know.

It’s good for mixed company as well. Some of the games I reviewed were too sexual in nature for a group night. Some people like to push the envelop in a group setting, so other games might be more your style.

But because we want to help couples build a healthy relationship, we try to avoid games and activities that are overly sexual in nature unless it’s just you and your spouse.

What I Didn’t Like

Not enough cards. This is one of the negatives I see in other reviews as well.

Disclaimer: Some questions are sexual in nature and may not be good for unmarried couples or a group setting.

How To Play

Designed for 2-8 players.

What I Liked

This is definitely not a game full of activity and antics; it’s a typical board game that leans on the competitive side.

That said, it’s fun and laid back so you can enjoy time with your friends.

What I Didn’t Like

Not as much ‘fun’ as other games. But it’s nice, clean and great for connecting with other couples (or your own spouse).

If you are looking for high action, this is not the game for you.

Family Valentine Games

Several summers ago my wife and I spent the week with some friends of ours in Rosemary Beach, Florida.  One thing that stood out to me during the week was their tight family bond.

One thing they did each day was ‘game time.’  They gathered around a board game and spent much of the afternoon (or evening) laughing and being silly.  Of course we participated (when we weren’t vegging at the beach).  It was beautiful to see their family play together.

Here’s 5 family games you can play on Valentines (or any time).

#1: Smart Ass

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B000NP4832&Format= SL400 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=thnogrll 20&language=en USir?t=thnogrll 20&language=en US&l=li3&o=1&a=B000NP4832

How To Play

This is a fast pace table top game where players make their way around the board by answering by guessing the answer to clues from a card.

What I Like

It’s pretty fast pace and good for the whole family.

What I Didn’t Like

Best played with a group (the entire family).

The game is short because the board is small and it doesn’t take long to make it to the end.

#2: Twister Scrabble

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B0818CXMTW&Format= SL400 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=thnogrll 20&language=en USir?t=thnogrll 20&language=en US&l=li2&o=1&a=B0818CXMTW

Ages 8 and Up
Players: 2-4

How To Play

The Today Show featured this as one of their top 31 family games for 2020.

Click the image below to watch. Twister Scrabble starts at 2:50.

What I Like

This is a fairly new game from Hasbro in their ‘mash up series.’ They take two [or more] games and mix them together to create a new game.

This is the mashup of Twister and Scrabble.

I like that it’s active; keeps you moving. And fast paced.

Better than the old Twister because you can get creative coming up with words to spell on the mat.

What I Didn’t Like

Can be a little difficult (like Twister used to be) to get two people on the mat.

If you have health problems, you may have to sit this one out. Although it should be fun to watch and get a laugh of others.

Ages Teens and Up
Players: 3 or more

How To Play

What I Like

Amazon’s reviews are pretty impressive. Out of approximately (at this writing) 4,500 reviews, 92% are 5 Star.

Obviously people love this game. I think the appeal is that it is family friendly, but you can also add an ‘adult version’[gambling, etc] to it.

If you want a relaxing night with the family, this game should be in your game room.

What I Didn’t Like

The biggest complaints have been that there is no strategy. It’s simply the luck of the roll.

In my opinion that’s one of the things that makes it enjoyable.

It’s definitely not a high competitive game (although I can see where you could make it so).

#4: Farkle

How To Play

What I Like

This continues to be one of our family favorites. We play it a lot when we go see our parents.

This is another game that has over an 85% 5 Star rating (at the time I’m writing this).

It’s simple and fun.

What I Didn’t Like

The original game I purchased (years ago) had a decent size cup. I read that many people complain about how the cup is too small.

My answer: Get another cup.

#5: Taboo Speakout

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B0818CN4QW&Format= SL400 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=thnogrll 20&language=en USir?t=thnogrll 20&language=en US&l=li3&o=1&a=B0818CN4QW

Ages: kids and up
Players: 4-6

Another Hasbro mashup. Taboo and Speakout.

How To Play

Taboo is the game where your partner reads clues and you have to guess the word they are referring to.

Add the twist of ‘Speakout’ where the person who wears the mouthpiece has to say the word and the other person who isn’t wearing the mouthpiece has to guess the word.

The timer counts down as players try to get teammates to guess the forbidden word without saying the 5 other words on the Word card. But players have to do this wearing a mouthpiece that makes it really hard to understand what they’re saying.

Watch Reese Witherspoon play Speakout with Ellen.

What I Like

Everybody in the family seems to like this one. It’s silly and very funny.

Kids especially get into it.

Sometimes everyone on the team has to wear a mouthpiece which makes it even more hilarious.

What I Didn’t Like

It only has 100 Word cards, 20 Challenge cards, 6 mouthpieces. So you might want to boil the mouthpieces each time.

Some players actually can’t bring themselves to put the mouthpiece in once someone else has worn it (even if it was weeks ago).

Couples Valentine Games

Since our kids are grown and have their own family traditions at Valentine’s Day, my wife and I have our own special plans for this special day.  We usually grill out (no restaurants for us.  We’d rather spend the night at our house which we converts to a romantic dinner party for two.)

We also like to play a fun game that bonds us.  Here’s 5 games for couples on Valentines Day.

#1: Touch & Tell

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B07H4PLGW6&Format= SL400 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=thnogrll 20&language=en USir?t=thnogrll 20&language=en US&l=li3&o=1&a=B07H4PLGW6

How To Play

What I Liked

The game is designed to get you physically connected (through touch) as well emotionally connected. The questions can be pretty basic, but by adding the element of touch gives the game depth.

Good game for a date night. Helps you spend time building a bond.

What I Didn’t Like

Only 250 cards in the game. You can go through them pretty quick if you play on a regular basis.

This is also not the game if you are just starting to date. Designed more for couples who are established in a relationship.

How To Play

This is a simple card game. You draw a card and discuss the topic.

What I Like

This is not just a ‘get to know each other’ game. It’s great for newlyweds, as well as couples who have been together for a while.

One couple talked about how their marriage struggled when their kids moved out. The intimate (and topics discussed) helped them reconnect.

Some couples have difficulty talking about certain subjects. This game can help you break the ice in a fun, loving way.

I think it would make a great wedding gift as well as a Valentine special date.

What I Don’t Like

There is not much to dislike.

Some couples did express being a little uncomfortable answering questions and discussing some of the topics.

Good news is that it presents the subjects for discussion in a healthy way.

How To Play

Simple card game to build interaction.

Pick a card and follow the instructions.

This is designed to build intimacy; as the name suggests.

What I Like

One thing I liked was not all the cards have to do with physical intimacy.

For example, one card asks:

If you could pick one year of your life to do over, which year would you pick and why?

One dad said he removed the cards about physical intimacy and played it with his son. Their conversation helped them deepen their relationship.

What I Didn’t Like

Some of the cards were pretty simple. I find this to be the case with most games like this. Some are great, others are not.

Some feel the price is steep for 150 cards.

How To Play

This is designed only for couples.

What I Like

Clean and thought provoking.

This is produced by The American Association of Christian Counselors and designed to create emotional and physical connection in your relationship.

It’s based on research in human behavior and relationship dynamics.

Here is a couple talking about how the game impacted their relationship.

What I Didn’t Like

There are religious connotations to the game and some people find this offensive.

I do not. It is one of the things that actually appeals to me.

#5: The Gottman Couples Retreat Board Game

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B00UB4C1FC&Format= SL400 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=thnogrll 20&language=en USir?t=thnogrll 20&language=en US&l=li3&o=1&a=B00UB4C1FC

I couldn’t leave this one out although I’ve never played it.

This is from The Gottman Institute. They been doing couples research for over 40 years and have written numerous books on marriage. They offer a wide array of programs, including this new board game.

The game is based on the tools the Gottman’s have provided couples to build strong, healthy relationships.

These tools were turned into this board game.

How To Play

It is a board game set on a virtual island. The rules are simple. Rolling the dice and moving to the correct place, all the while answering questions that deepen your relationship.

What I Like

It’s based on their research and work with couples spanning decades. This game will help you become familiar with some of their concepts. It also focuses on the major issues that couples often struggle with.

What I Didn’t Like

Some of the questions lead you to believe this game is only for couples with serious communication issues.

Some of the cards repeat themselves.

Sexy Valentines Games

Valentines Day is the day for love.  If you are ready for a super fun and sexy evening with your spouse, check out these 5 Sexy Valentines Games you can play to spice up your romance.

#1: The Picture Game

small box
Photo by Kelli McClintock on Unsplash

Here’s one from Marriage.com called The Picture Game. It’s one you create.

How To Play?

Take a small box and paste pictures on it of your choice. Now throw the box like dice and your partner has to do what the image is asking him to do. You can use pictures which show a kiss, etc.

What I Like About It

You can be as creative as you want to be. This allows you and your spouse to work together ‘building the game’ so you can enjoy it together.

Or, one partner puts it together as a surprise to the other.

#What I Don’t Like About It

There is nothing to ‘not like.’ This is a game you create, so it can be what you want it to be. Sexy. Casual. Flirty. You name it.

Where To Find It

In your own mind. What are you waiting for. Get started creating this fun, sexy game tonight.

You simply need a few items:

Pictures from magazines [or you can draw them yourself]

A box to put the pictures in

Then pull out a picture from the box and act it out

#2: Romantic Scavenger Hunt

emiliano vittoriosi 0N azCmUmcg unsplash
Photo by Emiliano Vittoriosi on Unsplash

This is another one found on Marriage.com.

How To Play

This one takes a little planning.

Figure out the end result, such as a romantic dinner at your favorite restaurant. Or a playful night in your [or his] favorite lingerie. You can even have a special gift (ring, necklace, etc) as the final reveal.

Write out clues to guide your partner to the next clue. Each clue leads to the next until you finally reach the end result.

This is one you can have fun with.

Why I Like It

It’s fun and creative. Your imagination is your only limitation.

What I Don’t Like

Again. There is nothing to dislike. You are creating the rules.

It’s YOUR game. So make it like you want it.

#3: Naughty Dice

alex chambers CyMd0vOYFfU unsplash
Photo by Alex Chambers on Unsplash

Thanks to Crystal Schwanke for this one.

How to Play

Naughty dice associate numbers with certain acts that you have to perform to your partner.

To play, write out body parts and actions on a larger sheet of paper and number them accordingly.

For example, you may roll the dice and get a one and a seven. If one corresponds to “kiss” and seven to “neck” on the sheet, that’s what you have to do.

What I Like

This can be super intimate. Best played in a comfortable setting in private.

What I Don’t Like

Not much.  You are in control of the game, so you can let it go where you want it to go.

#4: KindU App

kindu app

I recently found this app. Haven’t explored it fully yet, but it looks interesting.

There goal is: To inspire intimacy in a fun flirty way.

Their Story:

KINDU was created by a group of doctors who were inspired by a sexual health class in med school. The class was meant to expose us straight-laced medical students to the full spectrum of human sexuality. We learned about fetishes, bondage and discipline, vibrators as well as about sex toys, sex positions, low libido, erectile dysfunction etc. You should have seen us blush!

We were fascinated and embarrassed at the same time. This made us realize the delicate nature of desire. We first developed KINDU as a hobby back in 2008. After further research, we discovered that intimacy is crucial to a healthy love life. The purpose behind our app became more about connection, communication, novelty, and fun.

How To Play

It’s an app that asks questions allowing you to respond.

What I Like

It is recommended by Parenting Magazine, Dating News, and YourTango. It has been featured on Yahoo News, NBC and Mashable. Though it’s new to me, it does come recommended.

What I Didn’t Like

It’s not really a game. It’s more of a Q&A to build connection.

Since I haven’t explored it fully, I’m cautious that some of the suggestions could be quite sexual. For some couples, this may feel appropriate. Married couples especially.

They even state, ‘But beware. Nothing is taboo with Kindu.

So enter at your own risk.

Where to Find

On your app store. Or just go to http://www.kindu.us/#home
